Frequently asked questions

When Is This Treatment Recommended?

Photodynamic Therapy (PDT) may be recommended for appropriately selected patients with precancerous sun damage, such as actinic keratoses, and certain superficial skin cancers. It may also be considered when multiple areas of sun-damaged skin need treatment. A dermatologist will evaluate the skin and determine whether PDT is an appropriate treatment option based on the patient’s condition and treatment needs.

What Can I Expect During and After Treatment?

During PDT, a photosensitizing medication is applied to the treatment area and allowed to absorb into the skin. The area is then exposed to a specialized light source that activates the medication and helps destroy targeted abnormal cells.

After treatment, the treated area may experience redness, swelling, warmth, peeling, crusting, or sensitivity. These effects generally improve as the skin heals. Patients may also be advised to protect the treated area from sunlight and follow specific aftercare instructions provided by their dermatologist.
