Frequently asked questions
When Is This Treatment Recommended?
Melanoma surgery is generally recommended when melanoma has been diagnosed and the cancer is confined to the skin or requires surgical removal as part of the overall treatment plan. The extent of surgery depends on factors such as the melanoma’s location, size, and tumor depth. In some cases, a sentinel lymph node procedure may also be recommended to help determine whether melanoma has spread to nearby lymph nodes.
What Can I Expect During and After Treatment?
Treatment typically begins with surgical removal of the melanoma and an appropriate margin of surrounding normal skin. Depending on the tumor’s characteristics, your dermatologist may coordinate additional evaluation, including a sentinel lymph node referral when appropriate. After surgery, follow-up care is important to monitor healing and check for any signs of recurrence or new skin cancers. Your treatment and follow-up plan will be tailored to your individual diagnosis.
