Clear, confident skin at every age.

What is Acne?

Acne is the most common skin condition in the United States, affecting teens and adults alike. Treatment is highly individual – we combine topical therapy, oral medication, and in-office procedures to clear active breakouts and prevent scarring.

What are the common symptoms?

  • Whiteheads and blackheads
  • Inflamed papules or pustules
  • Painful cysts and nodules
  • Post-acne marks or scarring

What causes Acne and what can trigger it?

  • Excess oil production: Increased oil production can contribute to clogged pores.
  • Dead skin cells: A buildup of dead skin cells can block hair follicles and form blackheads or whiteheads.
  • Hormonal changes: Hormonal changes, especially during puberty, can increase oil production. Hormonal fluctuations can also contribute to acne in adults.
  • Bacteria and inflammation: When clogged follicles become inflamed, acne lesions such as papules, pustules, nodules, and cysts can develop.
  • Family history: People with a family history of acne may have a higher risk of developing acne.
  • Certain medications and products: Some medications, cosmetics, and oily skin or hair products may contribute to breakouts in some people.
  • Other factors: Stress may worsen existing acne, and certain lifestyle or dietary factors may contribute to breakouts in some individuals.

How severe is my Acne?

  • Mild - Usually consists mainly of blackheads and whiteheads, with only a few inflammatory pimples such as papules or pustules
  • Moderate - May involve more widespread blackheads and whiteheads, along with a greater number of inflammatory papules and pustules. It may affect areas such as the face, chest, or back.
  • Severe - May include numerous inflammatory lesions, as well as deep, painful nodules or cysts. Severe acne has a greater risk of causing permanent acne scars and may require treatment by a dermatologist.

What treatments are available?

  • Medical-grade topical regimen
  • Oral antibiotics or isotretinoin
  • Hormonal therapy when appropriate
  • Chemical peels and acne scar treatments
